Life happens
Unexpected life changes often trigger the need for transformation for many founders and leaders. In hindsight, these events were often recognized as the catalyst demanding change. Many founders face these realities and find ways to thrive both personally and professionally, but it requires active and conscious effort. Let’s continue to support each other in creating sustainable, fulfilling lives alongside (or with) our entrepreneurial journeys.
“The thing that I learned early on is you really need to set goals in your life, both short-term and long-term, just like you do in business. Having that long-term goal will enable you to have a plan on how to achieve it. We apply these skills in business, yet when it comes to ourselves, we rarely apply them.” – Denise Morrison, Campbell Soup Co. CEO
You have set out on a clear entrepreneurial path, your purpose is clear and goals have been set. And then life happens. You have a kid (or twins!), unexpected things happen in your family, a virus changes the status-quo in the world. All founders will face these realities and will have to find ways to thrive both personally and professionally. But it requires conscious effort, challenge yourself on these questions:
- Do you have a clear view of your personal values and priorities, and how they guide your work-life harmony?
- Do you manage to set and maintain boundaries between work and personal time?
- Do you have enough energy left for activities outside of work that bring you joy and fulfillment?
- Are you satisfied with your work life harmony?
As a founder a typical work-life balance does not exist. A founders life is destined to be entangled with the work that they work on. It is important though to keep an eye on the “life” part, be mindfull that you are in it for the long haul and that requires planning.
Facing life changes
To face these unevitable changes we have three tips for you to keep in mind. Be also mindfull of the following:
- Take time to reflect on your personal goals, values and work-life harmony.
- The One-Page Personal Plan from the Scaling-Up methodology (Verne Harnish) can help in defining clear rules and priorities for yourself. ‘Grow your business without sacrificing your personal life’
- Speak-out when things change with your co-founders, partner or coach.
